Looking for companies that accept crypto as payment? There are actually many mainstream retailers already accepting cryptocurrency through third-party payment networks. Below, we’ll take a look at six of them and how you can pay with your cryptocurrency at each one.
1. Starbucks
Want to use your Bitcoin for your morning latte? You can pay with crypto at Starbucks through an app called Bakkt. Bakkt supports Bitcoin and just recently added the ability to use Ether.
It works through the Starbucks app, where it’s available as an alternative payment option. Once connected to the Starbucks app, Bakkt will convert your crypto into funds and add it to your Starbucks Card, which you can then use to purchase Starbucks through the app.
2. AMC
After it gained a reputation as a “meme stock,” AMC promised to start offering cryptocurrency as a payment option by the end of 2021. This is a promise they kept, giving movie-goers the ability to pay for online purchases with Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin. The CEO of AMC has promised to add Dogecoin next.
3. Microsoft
Microsoft originally accepted Bitcoin as a payment option in its online store in 2014, making it one of the first companies to accept crypto. While they briefly stopped this in 2018 due to Bitcoin’s price volatility, they’ve since started taking it again.
You can use Bitcoin to add funds to your Microsoft account, which you can then use to purchase Xbox subscriptions, apps, games, movies, and other items.
4. AT&T
AT&T became the first mobile carrier to accept cryptocurrency in 2019 when it announced it would begin using BitPay to process digital assets. BitPay is a payment service company that helps businesses easily accept and process various cryptocurrencies.
AT&T users can pay their phone bills with their crypto through AT&T’s website or mobile app by selecting BitPay as their desired payment method.
5. Overstock
Overstock has been bullish on Bitcoin since around 2014, when they first partnered with Coinbase to accept cryptocurrency as payment. Since then, the company has invested heavily in blockchain technology and even owns a trading platform called tZero.
To pay with Bitcoin or one of the other supported cryptos on Overstock, simply select the Bitcoin option directly on their website.
6. Petco
That’s right, you can use your crypto to buy everything you need for your furry friend at Petco! Petco is a partner with Flexa, a payments network that created an app called Spedn in collaboration with Gemini.
Flexa currently processes Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin, Gemini dollar, and most recently, Shiba Inu. Users must load their crypto onto the Spedn app. When they’re ready to pay, the cashier scans a unique code that converts the crypto into dollars. Another way to spend your crypto at Petco is to trade it for a gift card!
Will there be more companies that accept crypto in the future?
There will likely be more companies that accept crypto in the future as retailers face rising demand from their customers. In fact, the Flexa network has partnerships with many other big-name companies like GameStop, Baskin Robbins, Nordstrom, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Barnes and Noble.
Additionally, many small businesses and larger companies such as Ledger, Dish TV, and the Dallas Mavericks use BitPay to process cryptocurrency.
